Technical details of JPG files

The lossy compression of JPG images typically occurs in the ratio 10:1, which results in minimal loss of quality. Two main types of JPG images are: JPG/JFIF (used to store and send photos on the internet) along with JPG/Exif (used in many Digital cameras). Because of the way JPG files are compressed, there is some loss in exact data and they should not be edited overly as each edit diminishes the quality due to repetitive compression patterns. JPG files are best utilized as the final product and loss-free files are best used to edit. A compression rate of 100:1 are feasible, however, it will reduce the quality substantially, which is why is advised to limit the compression rates to 20:1 minimum to maintain qualityand reduce the amount of artifacts present in the image.
